ABSTRACT

In thrombosis and ambolism therapy, one of the therapeutive options is the use of anticoagulents. Patients who fake anticoagulants are susceptible to bleeding and cannot brush or floss their teeth. They are prone to periodontitis. Periodontal diseases are associated with periodontal cell destruction and consequently their cell contents would be found in the salvia. The assessment of albumin and total protein contents and determination of its correlation with periodontal parameters in patients who take warfarin are the goals of the present study. In this case-control study, the subjects were classified into 2 groups of patients who took warfarin [case group]. In both groups, periodontal parameters such as plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], pocket depth [PD], bleeding on probing [BOP] and clinical attachment loss [CAL], and total protein and albumin were assessed. T-test and Pearson test were used to analyze the data. Although salivary albumin was significantly higher in the case group in comparison with the control one, total salivary protein contents were not observed differently between the two groups. Compared with the control group periodontal clinical parameters were high in the case group and obvious significant differences were seen [p<0.05]. Appropriate oral and gingival hygiene instruction is necessary due to the high periodontal clinical parameters in patients who take warfarin

ABSTRACT

Statement of problem: Autoploymerized acrylic resins are used for construction of fixed provisional restorations. The linear polymerization shrinkage and water absorption are the critical factors in the desired properties of such restorations

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to compare the dimensional changes and water absorption of three fixed provisional acrylic resins,Trim II, Tempron, and Acroprars TRII

Materials and Method: In this experimental study, 90 acrylic samples [20 mm × 12 mm × 3 mm] were made by a metal mold [30 samples in each group]. Then, each group was randomly divided into two equal groups. Dimensional changes of the samples were measured immediately after polymerization and seven days post curing. The data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and T-test

Results: Acropars TRII resin exhibited the highest dimensional changes and water absorption. The lowest mean values were recorded for Tempron samples. One week after polymerization, no statistical difference was found between the dimensional changes of Trim II and Acropars TRII. Linear dimensional changes of all the used acrylic resins were less than 2%

Conclusion: It seems that water absorption of acrylic resins can compensate the polymerization shrinkage. This effect was more significant for samples made by Acropars TRII than the other tow groups. Clinically, linear dimensional changes of the three acrylic resins were acceptable

ABSTRACT

Salivary glands secrete a liquid known as saliva which plays an important role in oral homeostasis. Quantitative and qualitative variation in salivary secretion can cause dental caries and periodontal disease. The decrease of saliva may be caused by some diseases and drugs such as sjogren syndrome, and antidepressant drugs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral contraceptive pills on the volume of unstimulated saliva in healthy women. In this experimental study, 85 healthy females including 35 study cases and 50 controls with the mean age of 18-25 years, referred to Ahwaz dental school, were selected. The study group had been taking oral contraceptive pill for at least 6 months, but the control group had not been taking this kind of drugs. Subjects with no past medical history, no use of medications, and no history of depression were selected as study subjects. The 2 minutes amount of collected saliva of the subjects in both groups was measured and recorded. The results were analyzed using T-test. The mean age of the study and control group was 24.42 and 24.78 years, respectively. The mean unstimulated volume of the saliva in the study group was 1.11 [ml]/2minute, while in the control group it was 1.53 [ml]/2minute. There was a significant difference in the amount of salivary secretion between the two groups [p<0.001]. According to this study, it can be concluded that, use of oral contraceptive pills can cause reduction in unstimulated salivary secretion. Therefore, good oral and dental hygiene instructions should be emphasized for these patients

ABSTRACT

Saliva serves an important role in oral homeostasis. Protection against viruses, bacteria and fungus and dental remineralization are some roles of saliva. Xerostomia is a common complaint, especially among elderly woman and is usually the result of the salivary gland dysfunction. It may be beneficial to stimulate the salivary flow by sugar free chewing gums or substituting saliva by oral rinse, in patients with impaired salivary function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of stimulating materials such as, chewing gums and one oral rinse on the amount and pH of saliva. In this experimental study, 60 healthy individuals were randomly divided into four groups, each composed of 15. Before study, the mean amount and PH of the whole saliva were evaluated in 2 minutes. In group 1, 2 and 3 Orbit, Relax and Biotene chewing gums were used for 5 minutes, respectively. In the forth group, Biotene mouth wash was used for 30 seconds according to the manufacture's instruction. The mean amount of saliva in 2 minutes and mean of saliva PH were determined immediately and 45 minutes after use of the materials. Covarince analysis and the Least Significant Difference test were used for data comparison among groups and T-test was used for intra groups analysis. In all groups the mean amount of saliva increased immediately after using the materials, but after 45 minutes, though significantly higher than the initial one, the mean amount decreased. The mean of PH increased immediately after chewing the gums, but after 45 minutes use of the gums, only for Relax and Biotene gums, the mean of saliva PH was significantly higher than the initial record. Biotene in the form of mouthwash did not show any effect on PH of the saliva. Xylitol with mechanical factors such as chewing increases the amount of saliva and improves PH of the oral cavity. Relax and Biotene chewing gums, having no glucoses and contain only xylitol, due to the increase in amount of saliva and improvement of PH, should be considered as preferred chewing gums

ABSTRACT

Candida is an opportunistic organism which will become pathogen if predisposing factors are present. One of the predisposing factors for increasing prevalence of candida is the use of corticosteroids. Researches on candida infections in treated patients with inhaled corticosteroids are controversial. The purpose of this study was evaluating the effect of two inhaler corticosteroids [Fluticasone and Beclomethasone] on the number and frequency of candida species in saliva and its comparison with normal subjects. This experimental research was performed on three groups of individuals. The first group was 30 asthmatic patients used inhaler Fluticasone, the second group with the same number of patients used inhaled Beclomethasone and the third group was composed of 60 normal individuals as control. Subjects were selected after evaluating the medical history and assurance of absence of the predisposing factors. Subjects' saliva were gathered in sterilized tubes and cultured in chromagar media for evaluating the type of candida. The results were analyzed with oneway and tukey tests. Based on this study, the number of candida species was significantly different among the three groups. The number of candida species in patients used fluticusone was higher in comparison with the other two groups [p<0.001]. This study showed that the number of candida species in patients treated with corticosteroids inhaler was high in comparison with the control group. Thus for avoiding candida infection, proper oral health and prevention of predisposing factors in these patients are recommended
